AI Prompts for Shopify Product Descriptions That Sound Human
A product page has a few seconds to answer a shopper's questions: What is it? Is it for me? Why this one? What happens after I buy? Good product descriptions answer those questions clearly. Weak ones either say too little or bury the useful details under adjectives.
AI can help you write better descriptions faster, but the prompt makes all the difference. Below are practical AI prompts for Shopify product descriptions, along with the reasoning behind each one, so you can adapt them to your store.
What a strong Shopify product description includes
Before you prompt, know the target. Most good product pages have:
- A clear headline that says what the product is and who it's for
- A short opening (two or three sentences) about the main benefit
- Benefit bullets that turn features into outcomes
- Specs such as size, materials, compatibility and what's in the box
- Shipping and returns information, stated plainly
- Real social proof, only if you have it
AI is great at shaping this structure. It's not great at knowing your product, so you'll always give it the facts.
The prompt formula
Every prompt below follows the same pattern:
- Role: who the AI should act as.
- Task: the specific piece of copy.
- Facts: your real product details.
- Rules: tone, length, and what it must not do.
The rules part is what keeps AI copy from sounding like AI copy.
1. Product page headline options
Act as an experienced Shopify brand and conversion copywriter. Write 5 product page headline options for [PRODUCT]. Audience: [AUDIENCE]. Main benefit: [BENEFIT]. Keep each under 10 words. Plain language, no hype words like "revolutionary" or "game-changing."
Why it works: banning hype words pushes the AI toward specific, believable headlines.
2. The full product description
Act as an experienced Shopify brand and conversion copywriter. Write a product description for [PRODUCT] using only these facts: [FACTS]. Structure: a 2 to 3 sentence opening focused on the main benefit, then 5 benefit bullets, then a short "Good to know" section. Tone: [TONE]. Do not invent features, reviews, statistics or awards. Give 2 versions.
3. Benefit bullets from a feature list
Act as a Shopify product copywriter. Turn these features into benefit bullets: [FEATURES]. Format each bullet as "Benefit: supporting detail." Keep each under 15 words. Order them by what matters most to [AUDIENCE].
Features describe the product. Benefits describe the customer's life with it. "Double-wall stainless steel" is a feature; "Keeps coffee hot through your whole commute" is a benefit, as long as it's true.
4. An accurate specs section
Act as a Shopify product copywriter. Turn these raw specs into a clean, scannable specs section: [SPECS]. Use consistent units. Do not round, change or add any numbers. Flag anything that looks incomplete.
Why it works: "do not change any numbers" protects you from the AI "tidying" a measurement into something wrong.
5. Size or fit guide copy
Act as a Shopify apparel copywriter. Write a short size and fit guide for [PRODUCT] using this chart: [SIZE DATA] and these fit notes: [NOTES]. Help shoppers choose between two sizes. Keep it friendly and practical.
6. Shipping and returns module
Act as a Shopify store copywriter. Write a short, clear shipping and returns section based on this policy: [POLICY]. Use plain language and short sentences. Don't promise anything the policy doesn't state.
7. Bundle page copy
Act as an experienced Shopify copywriter. Write product page copy for a bundle containing [ITEMS]. Explain who the bundle is for and why the items work together. If there is a saving, state it accurately as [SAVING]. No fake urgency.
8. Rewrite a description that isn't converting
Act as a Shopify conversion copywriter. Here is my current product description: [DESCRIPTION]. Rewrite it to be easier to scan and more focused on the customer. Keep every fact and add no new claims. Then list 5 questions a shopper might still have that the page doesn't answer.
The list of unanswered questions is often the most useful output. Add those answers to the page or the FAQ.
Tips for product descriptions that convert
Write for one person. Name the audience in your prompt. A description for "busy parents" reads very differently from one for "outdoor photographers."
Match your brand voice. Paste in a description you love and add "Match the tone of this example."
Keep it scannable. Most shoppers skim on their phones. Short paragraphs and bullets win.
Use real social proof only. If you have reviews, quote them exactly. Never let AI invent testimonials or star ratings.
Think about search, but write for people. Use the words customers really use (check your store search data and Google Search Console), then write naturally. Repeating a keyword over and over makes copy worse, not better.
Update your SEO fields too. Shopify lets you set a separate page title and meta description. Ask the AI for a meta title under 60 characters and a meta description under 160 characters based on your final copy.
A simple process for a whole catalog
- Export a list of products with their key facts.
- Start with your top 10 products by traffic.
- Run the description prompt, edit, and publish.
- Fill in the SEO title and meta description.
- Review results after a few weeks, then move to the next batch.
